Roles and Responsibilities

The Business Developer performs business development activities including a focus on relationship development, project lead generation, assisting with project pursuits, aiding contract negotiations and proposal development for assigned region and market segment. The Business Developer will possess competency in the following areas in order to perform the role in a safe, productive, and effective manner.   • Generates and tracks project leads
  • Participates in local industry events & associations
  • Prepares customer and project specific strategies
  • Reads bid documents to determine contract requirements
  • Assists with writing technical documents to support project proposal development
  • Aids in securing contracts and finalizing scope, price and terms
  • Establishes daily documentation procedures
  • Facilitates the flow of project and client communication through use of electronic customer relations management (CRM)
  • Responsible for customer relationships from the sales lead stage through contract execution
  • Monitors customer satisfaction and intervenes if needed to address problems which may impact customer satisfaction
  • Creates and orally communicates effective presentations
  • Examines scope of work and reviews bid drawings and project specifications to fully understand the customer’s expectations and project requirements
  • Interviews, listens and analyzes needs of customers
  • Documents business development activities
  • Communicates effectively to the proposal team regarding progress, status and actions needed to develop more business
  • Researches current construction projects by geographic location and market segment
  • Identifies high priority and high probability sales leads
  • Forecasts anticipated revenue per customer
  • Prepares, submits, and secures approval of desired projects to bid
  • Effectively utilizes CRM programs to track status of project and client prospects
  • Utilizes successful people and relationship management skills
  • Gains access to and nurtures the development of relationships with personnel at key companies

 

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and 4 years’ related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of concrete construction  or related construction
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business documents, technical procedures, and government regulations
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedures
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive channels of communication with internal and external customers
  • Possesses excellent negotiating skills
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public
  • Good listening skills
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
  • Understands the basics of Project Estimating and Cost Accounting
  • Ability to define problems, collect information, establish facts, and draw sound conclusions
  • Understands and has working knowledge of contracts, specifications, drawings, and scope of work
  • Ability to understand market analysis to create and execute successful work plans to achieve BD objectives
  • Ability to assess the business opportunities and risk to determine the value of a client or project
  • Regularly required to sit and talk or hear
  • Exerts minimal physical effort, occasional handling of average weight objects up to 10 pounds
  • Work is primarily in an office environment, but involves exposure to outside weather and jobsite conditions
  • Frequently required to travel by auto or plane

Requirements
