Summary
The Dirt Foreman is responsible for assigned facets of excavation and abatement on the job site. S/He oversees assignments related to excavation that includes movement of earth, rocks, and debris. The Dirt Foreman provides direction and support supervision and may occasionally work alongside the assigned crew.
Roles and Responsibilities
The Dirt Foreman will perform the following duties in a safe, productive, and effective manner:
- Directs and performs general excavation duties within the following areas:
- Controls and Maintains Lay-out Lines During Excavation
- Oversees the crew with grading, excavating, loading, hauling, trenching, driving metal posts, and moving dirt to facilitate the completion of the job site earthwork
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of all tools and equipment required
Equipment/Materials
- Ensures trucks are effectively and efficiently loaded and unloaded
- Is responsible for inspecting processes and procedures
- Ensures fall protection equipment meets safety standards
SSQP
- Responsible for safety, schedule, quality, and productivity (SSQP) of the crew; holds morning huddles/Mission Task Analysis (MTA) covering daily work plans that include SSQP

- Supervises, trains, evaluates, and develops direct reports to ensure maximum returns on investment
- Addresses complaints appropriately
- Provides guidance, direction, coaching, and support to direct reports to maximize individual and overall department performance
- Responsible for holding timely performance appraisals and progress reviews
- Assists direct reports in developing sort and long-term goals that align with department and Company mission and strategy
- Ensures direct reports receive appropriate training that aligns with career development plans. Training may be remedial, ‘maintenance’, or geared to promotion
- Takes appropriate action to develop direct reports including, but not limited to, preparing and monitoring career development plans, promotions, demotions, lateral moves, corrective action, and progressive discipline
- Recommends that direct reports receive timely and appropriate compensation
- Collaborates with HR to ensure compliance with all employment laws, and related Company policies; may be responsible for conducting training or coordinating workshops related to such compliance
Requirements

High School diploma and a minimum of five years of related experience and/or training

Ability to use required technology for functions such as time keeping systems and viewing of construction drawings

Ability to read, understand, and complete job related documents and forms

Ability to communicate with co-workers, vendors, subcontractors, etc.

Know the abbreviated and common construction terms for the equipment and materials used

Ability to calculate mathematical figures such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, and proportions to practical situations

Ability to read and use a tape measure and apply associated math skills

Ability to direct work and evaluate strengths and weaknesses of co-workers

Ability to work with others in a team environment

Capable of leading a group of co-workers on a specific assignment
