Summary
The Assistant Controller leads accounting and financial management of Baker Equipment and Materials (BEAM), supporting the VP of BEAM. He/she is also responsible for coordinating and/or assisting with month-end close as well as the financial reporting process including account analysis and reconciliation. Financial Planning & Analysis is required to ensure quality forecasting while using data to optimize financial understanding and business decisions. The Assistant Controller acts as a liaison with financial auditors to coordinate financial audits as needed. This role reports directly to the Controller II-General Ledger and collaborates across all branches of BEAM and Corporate Shared Services departments.
Roles and Responsibilities
The Assistant Controller will possess competency in the following areas in order to perform his/her role in a safe, productive, and effective manner. - Accounting:
- Supports the issuance of timely and accurate financial statements
- Supports all functions of month end close in a timely and accurate manner
- Participates in monthly review to ensure branches operations are being accounted for correctly
- Supports the establishment, disposition, and financial set up of all BEAM assets, including rental rates, depreciation schedules, and taxation matters
- Understands GAAP and researches a variety of accounting issues
- Collaborates with other members of the Shared Services Accounting, GL, and Financial Departments (i.e. Financial Accountants, Tax Accountants, Accounts Payable) to resolve discrepancies in account analysis
- Participates in and/or coordinates physical inventories throughout the year and any research related to reconciling to the trial balance
- Supports all financial audit processes including the work-papers and other requests for information from the auditors
- Financial Planning & Analysis:
- Prepares and partners with leadership team on annual financial plan to ensure connected to the company operations, goals, and objectives. Provide insights to support growth and improve operations
- Prepares and works with leadership team on quarterly forecasting process to ensure forecast accuracy. Deliver insights and ideas to close any gaps
- Delivers ad hoc analysis with actionable insights into the company’s operations that guide decision making. Develops reports and tools to support analysis and understanding of business results
- Ensures leadership team understanding of the financial results, build financial acumen as needed
- Key F&A partner on operational initiatives and any related project teams representing BEAM
- Treasury:
- Provides schedules and other information to tax department to assist in preparation of local, state, and federal income tax returns
- Participates in the evaluation of BEAM-owned assets to establish proper insurance levels
- Responsible for the review and submission of any wire transfers or check requests and corresponding journal entries
- Systems:
- Leads resolution of operational challenges within ERP system
- Helps train and coach field co-workers on processes and procedures as well as technical support within systems
- Assists branch leadership and teams with onboarding new hires
- SME for invoice workflow system (OnBase). Troubleshooting issues, managing updates/upgrades, reporting out progress weekly
- Oversees Department of Transportation Coordinator responsibilities to ensure critical tasks are completed and assist with decision making
- Manages and prioritizes multiple deliverables to ensure all deadlines are met
- Takes appropriate action to develop direct reports including, but not limited to, preparing and monitoring career development plans, promotions, demotions, lateral moves, corrective action, and progressive discipline. Ensures support managers also take appropriate action with their staff.
- Collaborates with HR to ensure compliance with employment laws, labor laws, and related Company policies; may be responsible for conducting training or coordinating workshops related to such compliance
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university in Accounting; and a minimum of 5 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Knowledge of GAAP, FASB, auditing, fixed asset accounting, and familiarity with sales/use, and personal property tax filings
- Experience with budget development and business partnering on operational initiatives while delivering analysis & insights
- Proficiency in Microsoft software programs such as Word, Excel.
- Vista and/or RentalMan, SharePoint and Hyperion experience preferred
