“Baker prepared me to hit the ground running.”
Meet Marcus Kliebert — Baker Construction Project Manager in Baton Rouge, LA
From nuclear reactors to clean energy stations, Baker Construction’s civil team helps build some of the most complex and essential structures in the country. Our projects keep lights on, communities moving, and industries growing. And for those ready to move fast, that kind of experience fuels momentum.
Just six years after interning with Baker, Marcus is helping lead one of the largest liquid natural gas (LNG) projects in the company’s history. He got his start in estimating, then gained hands-on experience in project controls and field leadership at the side of highly experienced mentors. That full-spectrum foundation gave him the confidence to lead and the chance to build something bigger.
Why did you choose a career in construction?
I’ve always been drawn to the idea of building something from nothing. For me, construction isn’t just work, it’s the chance to shape the environment, solve real-world challenges, and leave behind something meaningful.
How did you come to work for Baker?
I interned with Baker in November 2019 while attending Louisiana State University. I joined the company full time in January 2020. Shortly after, we were awarded a new project in Port Arthur, Texas. This provided me with a unique opportunity to get fully prepared ahead of mobilization to site, giving me early exposure to the planning and preconstruction processes.
How did your early experience with Baker prepare you for your role?
Working with the Estimating team as an intern gave me a strong jumpstart in developing a solid mindset for project management. My internship with Baker helped me understand how projects are built from the ground up and prepared me to hit the ground running. More importantly, it sparked a desire to learn more about every construction department before pursuing a leadership role in project management.
How did Baker mentors shape your internship experience?
Several co-workers contributed to my development, but one who stands out is Estimating Manager Austin Daggett. He didn’t just assign tasks; he invested time in helping me understand the why behind the work. He exposed me to the fundamentals of estimating, cost tracking, and project planning, which gave me a real foundation going into the field. His mentorship was hands-on, direct, and extremely impactful, something I still carry with me today.
What do Baker’s values of People, Honor, Grit mean to you?
Our values are more than a motto — they truly reflect how we operate, support one another, and push ourselves to succeed. What I love most is how young, hungry, and competitive we are as a team. There’s an energy in this group. Everyone’s driven, focused, and genuinely excited to be part of something bigger than themselves. We enjoy being around each other, and that camaraderie makes the hard work even more rewarding.
What are you most proud of?
The team I surround myself with every day. This is the largest LNG project Baker has ever been a part of, and we’re using this moment to show everyone exactly what we’re made of. We’ve assembled an incredible group of talent, and my focus as a leader is to help each of them grow into the roles they aspire to — pulling that next level out of them and helping them realize their potential.
