Meet Brenda Garcia — Baker Construction Field Project Engineer in Houston, TX

Brenda Garcia joined Baker in 2023, fresh out of college and hungry for a challenge. She left her home in Monterrey, Mexico, to take a chance on herself — and stepped straight into one of the largest and most complex projects in Baker’s history. As a Field Project Engineer, she’s helping manage fast-paced field operations, solving problems under pressure, and earning trust from the crews around her. With mentorship, real responsibility, and the chance to prove herself early on, Brenda didn’t just find opportunity — she found her edge.

Why did you choose a career in construction?

I’ve always been curious about the buildings around me — how they were made, who built them, and what it took to bring them to life. In high school, I met a girl who was studying civil engineering, and she opened my eyes to the possibilities. Construction felt exciting and challenging, and I was drawn to the idea of building something real and permanent.

How did you come to work for Baker?

I joined Baker in October 2023. I was in my last semester of Civil Engineering at ITESM in Monterrey, Mexico, when Baker gave a presentation at my school. That moment planted a seed. I had a chance to leave my country and work on a massive project. I didn’t have all the answers, but I was ready to bet on myself. I wanted to grow; I wanted to be pushed — and Baker offered me the chance to do both.

What does your role entail?

I help manage and coordinate work in the field — making sure we’re working safely, that the work is done right, and that we stay on schedule. A big part of my role is problem-solving and keeping communication flowing between the crews and the office. But I’ve also had a hand in safety, logistics, and planning. When you're on a fast-moving jobsite, you step up wherever you're needed. That’s where most of the learning happens.

How is Baker supporting your growth?

I have had several mentor-like leaders. Most of the mentorship didn’t come from formal sit-downs — it came from watching them lead, observing how they handled pressure, and asking questions along the way. They led by example, and I learned by staying curious and paying attention. It was freedom with accountability. They gave me space to figure things out but made it clear that I was responsible for doing it right. That level of trust made me want to rise to the occasion.

Why is Baker a great place to start your career?

Baker values initiative and potential. The challenges you’ll face here will stretch you and shape you into someone stronger, sharper, and more capable.  They give you real responsibility early on, and if you’re willing to learn and step up, they’ll back you. Many of our leaders started in the field and worked their way up. That shows that if you’re willing to work hard and grow, Baker will reward you.

What are you most proud of so far?

I came to the U.S. with just my suitcase, knowing no one. Now I’m here helping build a semiconductor manufacturing plant, which is also the largest project Baker has ever taken on. Being part of something at that scale is surreal. But what I’m most proud of is gaining respect from the field. That’s not easy — especially as a young woman in construction. But I’ve shown up every day, worked hard, listened, and proved that I belong.
