Why did you choose a career in construction?

My parents have been involved with construction and urbanism since before I was born. Growing up, I spent a lot of time looking at building models and visiting places they worked on, which had a big impact on my career choice.

How did you come to work for Baker?

I joined Baker in September 2023 based on two main considerations. First were the magnitude and importance of Baker’s projects. Second was being able to work in the field and learn everything I could.

What does your day-to-day job involve?

As a project engineer, my role consists of many different activities. My main responsibility is to ensure safety, production, quality, and schedule are met according to the goals for each project. That includes taking care of inspections and tracking material, orders, equipment, production, and so on. A big aspect of my role is communication. Communicating with co-workers, the general contractor, engineers, and third-party inspectors is crucial to solving problems and ensuring everything goes according to plan.

How has Baker supported your growth?

Joining Baker was a very good decision because it has allowed me to understand more about construction, how to be a better team player, and how to be more communicative.

I am mentored by a co-worker named Juan, who has helped me be more confident in my work and my decision-making. For example, he encouraged me to speak at meetings on behalf of Baker. He also helped me understand how to sequence work so I could do it by myself and lead a crew by myself.

Baker’s purpose is to build better structures and better lives. What does this mean to you?

I can say from my experience that this is true. I believe that with each project, each person you meet, every day that you show up, you grow as a person. You can learn so much about yourself, and I think it can help you with building character. I’ve learned how to be more empathetic, responsible, and disciplined. All of these have helped me in my life outside the jobsite.

Why is Baker a great place to start your career as an intern?

College is a great place to learn, but there is nothing like actually doing the work. Interns at Baker learn how to plan and how to solve problems. If someone is interested in construction, Baker is optimal based on the size of the projects and the combined years of experience of the people who work here. The experience can’t be found anywhere else.

Take your ambitions to the next level.

Be more, gain more, and achieve more with a company that is grounded in the values of People, Honor, and Grit.
