Why did you want to study and work in construction?
I always knew I wanted to go into construction in some way. My father owns a construction company and is a general contractor in my small hometown near Roanoke, Virginia. I started the Building Construction program at Virginia Tech right after high school.
Early in my program, I did two internships with a company in Richmond and thought I’d work with them after graduating. Then, in 2021, I got involved in the Associated Schools of Construction competitions. I was on the concrete team for Virginia Tech, and Baker was a sponsor. After that experience, I was hooked. So, I applied for a Baker summer internship in 2022.
What was the Baker internship program like?
My Baker internship experience was unmatched. It was very different from my other internships. A lot of companies don’t trust or don’t want to overwhelm their interns. Baker is one of those companies that gives you real responsibility when you’re ready and want it.
Everything about the internship set me up for success. I was there for the start of a new project in Nashville. As I learned, I was able to take on more tasks and work as a vital part of the team. Then, when I started as a real full-time project engineer, I was very prepared and fell right back into the motions of what I was doing as an intern. I’m now able to grow and add skills more easily since I already had that strong foundation.
Why did you decide to join full time after your internship?
First, it was the people and the culture. My team in Nashville is a very tight-knit group. I love the fact that even though we're a big company, it feels like a small company. There’s also the benefit of networking throughout the larger company, which you don't really see elsewhere. I frequently get to know co-workers in different regions, which is awesome. After graduating, I got the opportunity to work full time with Baker and was thrilled. I started in August 2023 with the same team.
What do you enjoy most about working for Baker?
I love that I'm part of a company that's well-respected. Compared to other companies, I think we're a bit more advanced. Having smart people and proven processes makes it all easier. Baker is known for being organized, professional, and buttoned-up in the industry. It's nice to work for a company with a good reputation like that.
I also joined Baker for the culture and people. Every day I'm learning something new, and that keeps the job fun and exciting. I love coming to work. I want to find ways to not only improving myself, but to also improve the company.
What does honor, one of the Baker company values, mean to you?
To me, honor is being true to your word. It’s respecting everyone across the board. From people working on the field to the C-suite, everyone has an important role in the trajectory of this company. Baker truly does walk the talk. So, I also show honor and respect my co-workers. We're here to not only build structures, but to build up one another.
As you start out your career, how is Baker helping you build a better life?
I'm new to the job and new to Nashville, too. My team has been so supportive. They really have helped me adjust to this big change and grow. Nashville is growing, too. Part of the draw of coming down here is that there's going to be a lot of work over the next 10 years. It's exciting to be a part of that change, a part of that growth, and benefit from it. Years from now, I’ll be able to say that I was a part of developing my new city.
