Meet Jon Flores — Project Engineer in Cincinnati, OH
Jon joined Baker as a co-op in fall 2024 while pursuing his degree at the University of Cincinnati. His experience spans estimating, preconstruction, project engineering, and fieldwork on a major water infrastructure project, offering exposure across every phase of the work. Along the way, Jon built strong relationships and earned the trust of his team through real responsibility. That foundation prepared him for what came next and led him to accept a full-time offer from Baker in August 2025, nearly a year before graduation.
Why did you choose a career in construction?
Growing up, I always loved building things. In high school, my family decided to do a home renovation, and I got my first true taste of construction. Seeing something go from bare bones to a finished product firsthand helped me decide that construction was the right path for me.
How did you come to work for Baker?
I started as a project engineer co-op during the fall of 2024 while studying at the University of Cincinnati. In talking with the recruiter, I saw how much Baker values its people and helps individuals grow in their careers. The company offered me a full-time role in August 2025, which I will start after I graduate in May 2026.
What is your co-op experience like?
I am working on the Little Miami Solids Disposal project in Cincinnati, Ohio. We are constructing two new buildings and making changes to existing buildings that will improve how the Little Miami wastewater plant disposes of sludge. I’m working with the team to push the project along, such as checking in rebar deliveries, reviewing and submitting requests for information and submittals, and working with the engineer to find solutions to design challenges.
This project is special to me because I have worked on it from the very beginning stages, going all the way back to estimating and preconstruction. Now I’m doing project engineering and fieldwork.
What made you decide to join Baker full time?
The biggest factor was the relationships I had built, making it feel like home. I am proud to work with a great group of people I can call friends. Without them, I wouldn’t know what I know today.
What do you enjoy most about working on water infrastructure projects?
The most valuable aspect of working on water infrastructure is the scope of work. Compared to other types of construction projects, you are exposed to far more scopes of work that you can learn and master, from concrete to piping and equipment installation, as well as carpentry and steel erection. You are definitely able to learn the most in this line of work.
